Rosa californica
Family: Rosaceae (Rose)
Flowers — color: magenta, size: 2", type: 5 petals
California Rose has a simple flower with five magenta petals, almost two inches diameter. Each petal has a fine marbling of darker red veins. Dozens of yellow stamens with arrowhead anthers spread up and away from the center, which holds several dozen pistils in a 1/4" mound. The flowers develop into small fruit, deep red rose hips.
Habit:
California Rose is a small shrub that enjoys damp places, but seems to thrive in the dry chaparral, too. The compound leaf has opposing pairs and one terminal leaflet (oddly pinnate). Each leaflet is dull and elliptical, and the edges have sharp jagged teeth. Their rough surface clearly shows the vein and ribs.
Observations:
Clubhouse near Burton Mesa Rd. in small marsh and along Harris Grade past Rucker Road.
